About this artwork

A finely drawn black-and-white mandala sits at the centre of the sheet while broad painted rays in red, yellow, magenta, blue, green and orange stream out to every edge. It feels like a festival burst of colour around a still, focused core.

Shakti is the divine feminine energy in Hindu thought, the creative power behind all movement, worshipped as Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati and in countless local forms. Anusuya shows that power as radiance: the rays are painted wide and loose, in the bright reds, yellows and magentas associated with festivals of the Goddess, and they fill the paper right to its edges.

The mandala at the centre is the opposite in mood, drawn in tight black fineliner rings of fans and petals around a small wheel divided into four. That contrast is the heart of the idea: Shakti is energy, but it flows from a still centre. Strong and celebratory, this piece suits a space where people gather, or a wall that needs a confident burst of colour, and it makes a meaningful gift during Navratri.
