About this artwork

A small blue peacock sits at the centre of a half-open mandala, its tail spreading below as paisley-shaped feathers with eye spots in blue, yellow and green. Bright green petals tipped with white dots fan out around the top.

In this piece the peacock is woven into the mandala rather than placed on top of it. The head and crest sit at the centre, the rings of triangles and petals form its raised display, and the tail spills out of the circle at the bottom as paisleys, each marked with a feather's eye. Almost all of it is drawn in blue ink, with soft washes of green and yellow.

India's national bird has a rich place in its art and devotion: the peacock is the mount of Kartikeya, its feather crowns Krishna, and its dance is welcomed as a sign of the monsoon. It stands for grace, beauty and renewal. The paisley is a deeply Indian motif too, the mango-shaped buta of Kashmiri shawls, so this piece brings two familiar emblems together in one composition. It makes a welcoming focal point for an entrance or living room.
