About this artwork

A six-pointed star in red and yellow burns at the centre, wrapped in grey lace, yellow fan petals and an outer ring of orange sunburst fans that fade into golden circles.

Rather than drawing a sun with a face or straight rays, Anusuya builds its radiance from the inside out. The centre is a yellow hexagon inside a red six-pointed star; around it, bands of grey lace and pale yellow fans act as the sun's glowing atmosphere, and outer fans striped in orange and red flare out like solar flames.

Surya, the sun, is one of the most widely honoured forces in India, greeted at dawn and celebrated at Pongal and Makar Sankranti as the giver of light, warmth and harvest. The six-pointed star at the heart also echoes the shatkona of Indian sacred geometry. Warm without being overwhelming, the piece leaves generous white space around the mandala, so it brightens a wall without crowding it. It is a cheerful focal point for any room that could use a little sunshine.

What does the six-pointed star mean?
