About this artwork

Hundreds of straight pen lines, drawn in green, orange, blue and purple, bend into curves and spirals across a six-sided frame, like string pulled between pins. Nothing is coloured in; the colour is all in the lines.

This is a different kind of mandala from the rest of the collection. Instead of filled patterns, it uses the string-art technique: straight lines drawn between two edges, each shifted slightly from the last, so that together they create a curve that none of them contains. Six-fold rotation turns those curves into a spinning star inside a hexagon.

Anusuya describes these strings as threads tying past, present and future into one tapestry, and the technique supports that: each line is simple on its own, but meaning appears only when they are seen together. Indian philosophy often uses the image of the sutra, literally a thread, for ideas that hold life together. Light, airy and very modern, this piece leaves plenty of white paper showing, so it suits minimal interiors, pale walls and spaces where a busier mandala would feel too much.

Questions about this piece

Is it made with real string?

No. It is drawn entirely with pens on A3 paper. The string-art effect comes from many straight lines, each shifted slightly, that together form curves.

What is the difference between the original and the replica?

The original is the one-of-one drawing, hand-drawn on A3 paper and signed by Anusuya R. The replica is a giclée/inkjet print on A3 art paper. Both arrive in the same black wood frame with glass and a white mat.
