About this artwork

Two crescents of yellow blooms, one on deep navy and one on olive, curve around a black-and-white mandala split down the middle. White braided rings and a chequered centre hold the whole cycle together.

The cycle of the title is drawn as a circle in two halves. On one side the flowers sit on dark navy, on the other on olive, and the black-and-white pattern switches sides too, so light and dark keep handing over to each other the way the seasons do. Nothing is lost; it simply turns.

Flowers hold a central place in Indian devotion. They are offered at every puja precisely because they bloom, give and fade, and then bloom again. Anusuya echoes that rhythm with the white plaited rings, which loop without a break, and with the small chequered sphere at the centre, a still point around which the blooms rotate. Every petal of the yellow flowers is shaded by hand, with a dark seed centre, so they look warm and full against the cool navy. It is a cheerful piece with a calm, orderly structure underneath.
