About this artwork

A grey, finely hatched star spirals at the centre of a lobed mandala whose segments each take a different colour: purple, blue, green, maroon and charcoal, with small yellow-orange triangles between them.

A foliole is a single leaflet of a compound leaf, one part of a larger whole. That is how this mandala is built: five segments, each a leaflet in its own colour, filled with the same hearts, fans and dotted petals, and all joined at a twisting star drawn in fine hatched lines. The star seems to turn, and the segments turn with it.

Anusuya imagines these petals as made of starlight, and the shading supports that, deepening towards the edges and lightening towards the centre like a nebula. In mandala tradition, a wheel divided into coloured segments often stands for different elements or directions coming together into one. This is a quieter, more intricate piece than the rainbow mandalas in the collection, and it is best appreciated up close, in a study, bedroom or reading corner where it can be looked at slowly.
