About this artwork

Three pink lotuses, a bud and broad green leaves rise on patches of deep blue water across one side of an intricate black-and-white mandala. The colour feels like light breaking through a dark, patterned sky.

The mandala here plays the part of deep space: rings of petals and pointed leaves, darkened in places with solid black, spread to the edge of the circle like a night sky full of structure. Across it, Anusuya lays a stem of pink lotuses with their leaves and a closed bud, painted in soft colour over the ink.

In Indian tradition the lotus is the flower of wisdom precisely because it grows out of dark water and opens clean and bright above it. It is the seat of Saraswati and Lakshmi and a symbol of awakening in both Hindu and Buddhist art. Placing it over a monochrome mandala makes that idea visible: the flowers are the only colour in the composition, so they draw the eye first and then lead it into the pattern beneath. The off-centre placement keeps the piece lively rather than formal.

Questions about this piece

What does the lotus symbolise here?

The lotus rises from dark water and opens clean above it, so in Indian tradition it stands for wisdom and awakening. Here it floats over a dark, dense mandala, the 'deep space' of the title.

Is the original one of a kind?

Yes. Each original is one of one, hand-drawn and signed by Anusuya R. If you would like the same image at a lower price, the replica is a giclée/inkjet print on A3 art paper, framed the same way.
