About this artwork

Seven six-petal rosettes in magenta, navy, blue, green, maroon, orange and yellow cluster on a disc of metallic gold, surrounded by a dark navy ring and a star of patterned tiles in pink, orange and blue.

The golden core is literal: a full disc of metallic gold on which Anusuya draws seven overlapping-circle rosettes, the building blocks of the Flower of Life, each in its own colour. One sits at the centre and six surround it, the same arrangement found in the Seed of Life, so the whole core reads as a single flower made of many.

Seven is a resonant number in Indian tradition, from the seven chakras to the saptarishis and the saptapadi, the seven steps of a Hindu wedding. Here it becomes a picture of many lives sharing one golden source, which is Anusuya's idea of an inner light at the heart of existence. The star-shaped border of square tiles, each patterned with fans and swirls, gives the piece a festive, jewel-box finish, and the gold glows warmly in lamplight.

Questions about this piece

Why seven rosettes?

Six rosettes around one central rosette is the classic Seed of Life arrangement. Seven also echoes the seven chakras and the seven steps of a Hindu wedding.

What is the difference between the original and the replica?
