About this artwork

A hexagon of orange and purple checkerboard panels recedes like a hall of mirrors towards a small black-and-white mandala at its heart. The depth pulls the eye inward and then holds it still.

The title is about looking inward and seeing yourself reflected back. Anusuya draws six walls of orange and purple chequers that shrink towards the middle, so the hexagon reads like a corridor of facing mirrors, each reflection a little smaller than the last. At the end of that corridor sits a fine black-and-white flower with six-fold symmetry, a still centre that does not change however the walls seem to move.

In mandala tradition the centre, or bindu, stands for the self and the source from which everything radiates. Here it is left uncoloured, drawn in pure black linework, while the warm and cool panels around it play light against shadow. A scalloped border of black-and-white motifs closes the shape like a frame within the frame. It blends optical art with traditional pen-work, and it is best seen on a plain wall where its depth can do the talking.
