About this artwork

A braided band of red, blue, green and grey threads circles a dense black-and-white mandala with a dark star-flower at its centre. Teal and orange shell shapes ring the outside like blossoms on a hedge.

The threads of the title are literal: four coloured strands plait around the drawing in an unbroken loop, binding the intricate inner garden of petals, fans and fine hatching to the bright scalloped border. The plait has no start and no end, and that is the point. Everything in this garden is held together by it.

In Indian thought the image of a thread runs deep, from the sacred thread of ritual to the idea in the Bhagavad Gita that all creation is strung together like pearls on a single string. Mandalas carry the same idea in circular form, since each ring depends on the one inside it. Anusuya keeps the centre in black and white and lets colour arrive only in the braid and the outer shells, so the eye travels from stillness at the heart to colour and life at the edge.
