About this artwork

Ganesha is drawn in sweeping, flame-like curves of red, orange and yellow against deep black shadow, his trunk curling to one side and a white tusk catching the light. Above him, a crescent with a dot and a flame glows like a lamp.

This is not a mandala but a bold, modern portrait of Ganesha, painted in flowing strokes that read like fire. His large ear and curling trunk are built from overlapping bands of red, orange and yellow outlined in black, three white lines mark his forehead, and a single white tusk stands out against the darker tones.

Ganesha is the remover of obstacles and the lord of beginnings, invoked before every new undertaking, and the title speaks of light and abundance. The crescent, dot and flame shape above him recalls the chandrabindu that crowns the Om symbol, and the warm palette carries the glow of a diya. With its strong colour and simple, sweeping shapes, it reads clearly from across a room, and it makes a fitting piece for an entrance or pooja room, or a griha pravesh gift.

Questions about this piece

Is this a traditional or modern Ganesha?

Modern. Ganesha is painted in bold, flowing curves of red, orange, yellow and black rather than detailed iconography, so it suits contemporary interiors as well as a pooja room.

What is the difference between the original and the replica?

The original is the one-of-one drawing, hand-drawn on A3 paper and signed by Anusuya R. The replica is a giclée/inkjet print on A3 art paper. Both arrive in the same black wood frame with glass and a white mat.
