About this artwork

One half of this circle is a densely patterned black-and-white mandala; the other half is a silvery sky filled with bright orange monarch butterflies. A few have already crossed into the pattern, as if the drawing itself were taking flight.

The idea behind this piece is transformation, and learning to meet change with grace. The composition shows it as a before and after. On the left, petals, fans and fine dotwork hold perfectly still in pen and ink. On the right, that order gives way to movement: monarchs in vivid orange, each wing veined in black and edged with white dots, scatter across a grey ground.

The butterfly is one of the most widely understood symbols of change, since it begins life as something entirely different. The mandala, meanwhile, is a symbol of wholeness. Putting the two inside one circle suggests that change does not break the whole; it completes it. The single splash of orange against black, white and grey gives the piece a graphic punch, and it holds its own as a focal point even from across a room.

Look closer

  • Left half drawn entirely in black fineliner: petals, fans, dots and hatching
  • Right half shaded silvery grey as a backdrop for the butterflies
  • A swarm of orange monarchs with black veining and white-dotted wing edges
  • Butterflies drift across the dividing line into the mandala
  • Single accent colour against a monochrome base

Questions about this piece

Why is half the mandala left in black and white?

The monochrome half is the still, patterned mandala; the orange butterflies are the change moving through it. Keeping one side uncoloured makes the monarchs stand out and gives the piece its sense of motion.

Is the original one of a kind?

Yes. Each original is one of one, hand-drawn and signed by Anusuya R. If you would like the same image at a lower price, the replica is a giclée/inkjet print on A3 art paper, framed the same way.
