About this artwork

Rows of small squares in yellow, magenta, green, orange, purple and navy twist into a whirlpool that ends at a tiny blue-and-white chequered centre. A ring of blue petals with coloured fan tips frames the spiral.

Chromatic Hypnosis is an optical piece. Because each row of squares is offset slightly from the one before, the bands seem to curve and rotate, pulling the eye towards the centre whether it wants to go or not. The petals around the edge are drawn in fine blue line with small fans of pink, yellow and red at their tips, a soft frame for a very energetic middle.

Spirals appear in Indian art from ancient rock carvings to kolam patterns, often standing for growth and the movement of energy. In a mandala, the spiral turns the usual still centre into a destination. Anusuya describes the piece as an invitation to introspection and creative flow, and it suits a desk, studio or any corner where you want your attention gathered. It is bold enough to hold a wall alone, yet compact enough to sit within a gallery arrangement.
