About this artwork

Overlapping grey scales, each set with a lime-green or blue diamond, spiral out from a small green flower like the facets of a cut gem. Black petal tips edged in white dots finish the outer rim.

The idea of crystals from the distant past shows in how every scale is shaded like a polished facet, catching light along its edge. Rows of them turn gently around the centre, so the whole mandala seems to be opening slowly, the way a flower does, while still keeping the hard geometry of a crystal. Between the scales, fine black patterning fills every gap.

Mandalas have long pictured time as a circle rather than a line: what begins at the centre returns at the rim. Here the little daisy-like flower is the seed, the lime and blue gems mark the layers that grew around it, and the dark outer petals close the cycle. The palette stays cool and restrained, with grey doing most of the work and colour used only as small accents, which makes this a piece for quiet rooms rather than loud ones.
