About this artwork

Four royal-blue swirls curl around a small teal six-petal flower, as if spinning out from the centre, and ring after ring of blue, aqua and white petals and a chequered band carry that movement to the edge.

The Big Bang of the title is the swirl at the centre: four curved blue forms turning around a single flower, as though the whole mandala were still expanding from that moment. Outward from it, a chequered ring, then rows of small lotus-like petal clusters, then wider petal bands open one after another, like a garden spreading from one seed.

Blue holds a special place in Indian imagery as the colour of the infinite, of sky and ocean, and of Krishna and Vishnu, while the lotus is the classic emblem of creation, the flower said to rise from Vishnu's navel bearing Brahma. Anusuya brings the two together in a cool palette of royal blue, aqua and white. The piece is intended to bring calm, and its single colour family makes it easy to place, especially in a bedroom, study or meditation corner.
