About this artwork

A ring of glossy pink circles, each with a small highlight like a bead or a blossom catching light, floats around a fine black-and-white mandala. One deeper pink dot sits at the very centre.

The title imagines cherry blossoms appearing out of black holes, and Anusuya keeps that image abstract. The mandala's dark pockets, solid black between pointed petals, are the black holes; the pink circles that ring them, glossy and round, are the blossoms appearing against all odds. A single deep pink drop at the centre is where it all begins.

Sakura is the Japanese cherry blossom, loved because its beauty is brief. The mandala tradition carries a similar thought: some mandalas, like Tibetan sand mandalas, are swept away once complete. Here restraint does the work. Everything is black, white and grey except the pink, so the eye goes straight to those points of colour and then wanders into the dense pattern around them. It is an elegant, quiet piece about fragility and the unknown, well suited to a modern room or a minimal wall.

Questions about this piece

Are cherry blossoms drawn in the piece?

Not as flowers. The sakura idea is shown abstractly: glossy pink circles ring a black-and-white mandala whose solid black pockets stand for the black holes of the title.

Does it arrive ready to hang?

Yes. Every order, original or replica, ships framed in black wood with a glass front and a white mat, about 40 × 53 cm, ready to hang. Shipping is free anywhere in India.
