About this artwork

Four hexagons nest inside one another, each drawn entirely in coloured ink: magenta at the edge, then blue, then deep green, and a warm red at the core. Every band repeats its motifs on all six sides like a reflection.

Mirroring Hexagons of Life is built on repetition. Each band is a mirror of itself, with the same fans, petals and scallops turning the corner on all six sides, and each band also mirrors the shape of the one inside it. The eye moves inward step by step until it reaches the small red hexagon, patterned with a delicate six-way flower.

The hexagon is one of nature's favourite shapes, seen in honeycombs, snowflakes and basalt columns, and it has long stood for harmony, balance and order. In Indian sacred geometry, six-fold forms such as the shatkona are also linked with the union of opposites. Anusuya draws the whole piece in coloured fineliner instead of black, which gives it a softer, jewel-like quality, close to embroidery or a fine printed textile. It is a quietly detailed piece that rewards a close look.

Questions about this piece

Why is there no black ink?

The linework is drawn directly in coloured fineliner, so each hexagonal band has its own colour from outline to fill. That gives the piece a softer, textile-like look than the black-and-white mandalas.

What is the difference between the original and the replica?

The original is the one-of-one drawing, hand-drawn on A3 paper and signed by Anusuya R. The replica is a giclée/inkjet print on A3 art paper. Both arrive in the same black wood frame with glass and a white mat.
