About this artwork

Six rounded lobes, alternating deep purple and blue and patterned with white flowers, ring a central black-and-white star-flower. Between them, segments of green, orange and yellow add flashes of colour like the inside of a shell.

A shell is a record of growth: every ridge marks a stage of life laid down over time. Anusuya draws that idea as a mandala whose outline is scalloped like a shell's edge, with each lobe etched in white floral pattern over rich purple or blue, and inner petals that overlap like the layers of a shell's lining.

Shells hold a special place in Indian tradition, from the conch blown at temple ceremonies to the cowries once used as currency, and they are associated with auspicious beginnings. Here the colour is etched in, tucked into small dotted segments of green and orange behind the overlapping petals, while the centre stays in fine black and white. It is a richly coloured piece that also rewards a close look, and Anusuya's idea of life as a colourful, layered journey comes through in every ring.
