About this artwork

A five-by-five grid of diamond tiles, alternating deep red and green, sits at the heart of this square-format mandala, with four round fan medallions at its corners and four pointed petals at its sides.

Petals and Patterns of Life is built from just two colours, red and green, used with real discipline. The central grid alternates them tile by tile, each diamond holding a small swirl or flower, and the same two colours return in the corner medallions, where fans open like hand fans, and in the pointed petals that reach outward from each side.

The square-within-petals layout recalls the kolam and rangoli patterns drawn at Indian doorsteps, where a simple grid grows into flowers. Red and green together are the colours of celebration in many Indian homes, of bangles, bridal saris and festive torans. Anusuya sees in it the richness and variety of life, every tile a little different within one shared pattern.
