About this artwork

A peacock drawn in intricate black-and-white linework curls inside a circular mandala, its crest, wings and tail picked out with teardrops of vivid blue. Below, three peacock feathers fan out in green, with eyes of blue, yellow, orange and red.

The inner peacock of the title sits within the circle, its head and body turned inward so that the bird and the mandala become one shape. Every surface is filled with fine pattern: scales, dots, paisleys and crescents, with blue used only for the teardrop feather marks on the rim, wings and tail. Below the circle, three full-colour feathers bring the piece down to earth.

In India the peacock is the national bird, the mount of Kartikeya and the source of the feather Krishna wears in his crown, and it stands for grace, beauty and renewal. The three feathers here are drawn in the traditional way, each with its glowing eye. Balanced between monochrome detail and bright colour, the piece suits traditional and modern interiors alike, and pairs well with Peacock Grace Mandala if you want to hang two peacock pieces together.
