About this artwork

A circle split into white and black halves, each filled with the other's colour in fine pattern, holds a small mandala at its centre and two dots of the opposite shade, yin-yang fashion. It sits on a warm orange square inside a border of green, yellow, blue and magenta petals and diamonds.

Yin and yang come from Chinese philosophy, but the idea of balanced opposites is just as familiar in Indian thought, in Shiva and Shakti, or in the Ardhanarishvara form that is half one, half the other. Anusuya draws it as a dream: the white half is filled with delicate black paisleys and petals, the black half with white ones, and black and white moons drift across the line between them.

At the centre, a small round mandala belongs to neither side. A thin coral stripe runs vertically through the whole sheet, underlining the division, and the border of coloured petals and diamonds wraps everything in festive pattern, like the edge of a woven sari. It is a thoughtful reminder of life's dualities and the beauty of balance, and it pairs well with simple, uncluttered walls.

Questions about this piece

What do the two halves represent?

They are complementary opposites, like day and night, each containing a little of the other. Small black and white circles cross the dividing line, and a mandala at the centre belongs to neither side.

Is the original one of a kind?

Yes. Each original is one of one, hand-drawn and signed by Anusuya R. If you would like the same image at a lower price, the replica is a giclée/inkjet print on A3 art paper, framed the same way.
