About this artwork

A few sweeping black lines form both Ganesha and the sacred syllable Om, his face and trunk emerging from a golden-yellow ground beneath a band of deep red. A swastik sits in the curl at the top left.

Emerging Golden Sri Ganesh is a study in economy. With just a handful of confident black strokes, the form reads two ways at once: as Ganesha's head, eye and curling trunk, and as Om, the primordial sound from which, in Hindu thought, creation arises. The yellow below is laid down in visible vertical strokes, so the figure seems to rise out of a golden light.

Ganesha and Om are closely linked in devotion; he is often described as the embodiment of Om, which is why so many artists draw him this way. The swastik in the upper curl is the ancient Hindu sign of auspiciousness, drawn at thresholds and on new account books at Diwali. Anusuya speaks of wisdom, strength and protection, and the piece carries them simply. Warm and graphic, it suits an entrance, a pooja room or a new office.
